A ROYSTON woman is launching a support group for those who have suffered the trauma of losing someone to suicide.

Jayne Bratton, of Owen Drive, lost her father to suicide 17 years ago, and in her searches for a support group for herself last year, found that the nearest one was in Norwich.

Although she attended the group and received great support, she decided it was about time to set one up locally.

The If Only group was then born, and will hold its first meeting in November.

Mrs Bratton said: “I am acutely aware that there is a severe lack of support for the family and friends of people who have lost a loved one to suicide.

“I decided to set a support group up locally in the hope that I could help others, and decided to call the group If Only after the phrase which used to begin almost every thought of my father.”

Mrs Bratton, who is also a member of the North Royston Action Group, hopes to give help and advice to those who find talking about suicide uneasy.

“I feel that a loss to suicide is still a subject which many people find extremely difficult to talk about, and one which is often seen as a taboo subject. It often receives an awkward reaction.

“I hope that the group will help people to deal with this reaction, understand how to talk to people, share illogical thoughts, and allow those who have lost someone to feel less alone.”

If Only is open to anyone who has lost someone to suicide, regardless of their relationship or location.

The first session will be held on Monday, November 8, and then for every second Monday of the month, at The Bayners Hotel in Royston, from 8pm until 10pm.
