FOUR STUDENTS at Freman College, Buntingford, have been named among the highest achievers in the country in this year's GCSE exams.

Tom Armond achieved 11 A* grades, and received one of the top five marks for English literature.

He was also in the top ten nationally for chemistry and physics.

Also featuring in the top five for English literature was Richard Thomas, who picked up seven A*s and four As.

Naomi Divall and Nicola Shepherd were both among the top ten food technology students in the country at GCSE level.

Tom, 16, who is now studying A-level chemistry, French, history, maths, and further maths at the college, said: "I was very pleased with my results.

"I haven't really thought about my career yet, but my favourite subject is chemistry, so I would like to do something involving that."

Richard, 16, is also now taking A-levels at the college.

He is studying English, maths, further maths, physics, and ICT, but has taken the step-up in his stride.

"You certainly notice a difference between GCSE and A-level, particularly in further maths, which is quite tough," he said.

Helen Loughran, head of Freman College, said: "I am so impressed by the achievements of these students.

"They are obviously very able, but they are also extremely hard-working, and really deserve the national recognition they have received.
