TWO students from Freman College in Buntingford have been awarded a place on prestigious chemistry summer camps run by the Salters Institute.

Kathryn Giblin and Matthew Egginton, both 15, will spend three days in July studying university level chemistry with some of the country's top research chemists.

The two students, who study triple science, were nominated by the head of chemistry Sally Portch.

Mrs Portch said: "Kathryn and Matthew are the keenest and most enthusiastic chemistry students. They are outstanding young scientists who show a real flair for the subject."

The Salters Institute plays a major role in the support of chemistry teaching, and encourages young people to pursue careers in the UK chemical industry.

Mrs Portch said: "The summer camps aim to nurture the next generation of scientists and give them a taste of how exciting chemistry can be at university and beyond.

"It is an opportunity for two able students to expand their knowledge and take part in experiments that they wouldn't be able to do within the class environment. It will be challenging, but I know that they will have a fantastic time."

Kathryn, who will be attending Birmingham University, said: "Chemistry is one of my favourite lessons and I'm really looking forward to learning more about the subject and experiencing university life."

Matthew, who is going to Nottingham University, said: "We are going to be learning new experiments outside the classroom and we are getting the chance to use the university's facilities and work in a high-tech lab."

It is the first time that Freman College students have been awarded a place on such an educational camp.

Head teacher Helen Loughran said: "I am really delighted for Matthew and Kathryn. They are outstanding students who really deserve this national recognition. This will certainly be a really exciting and memorable experience for both of them.
