A stroke survivor has set himself a challenge to walk the entire length of Hadrian’s Wall in a week to raise £5,000 for a carers’ charity.

Alan Weston, 62, of Cottered, will begin his 84-mile long coast to coast trek in Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria on Saturday 7 June and aims to finish on June 14 in Wallsend on Tyneside.

The former project money is walking with four other men and raising cash for Carers in Hertfordshire, having suffered a stroke in 1999 at the age of 47.

Now 15 years later, Alan has set himself the challenge to walk the Wall as a testimony to the power of recovery and to give something back to those caring for loved ones. It is also a thank you to the love and support he received from his wife and children.

He said: “I retired early, in part to try and improve my health and concentrate more on giving back to those who had cared for me. Carers’ lives also change as well as the lives of those they care for. People may no longer be able to work full time; social lives may become limited as can mobility or the energy to just get up each day and carry on. Friends, no matter how sympathetic, can become ‘tired’ and drift away. Isolation can lead to depression and feelings of hopelessness.”
