Steeple Morden Primary School and the Wimpole Estate have both confirmed they are closed today, as a result of ‘a possible burst water main’ in the area which has caused problems to the water supply in several villages this morning.

A member of staff from Steeple Morden C of E Primary School in Hay Street told the Crow that they have had to close the school today because of the water problems, and will be open tomorrow – the last day of term – if the water is back on.

Many schools are already on their holidays – and one of the biggest attractions for a day out in our area, Arrington’s Wimpole Estate, is also confirmed closed.

They have now tweeted: “ESTATE CLOSED. We currently have no water across the estate due to a burst pipe in the local area. We’re foreseeing being closed until the situation is rectified. Please keep checking back - we’ll update you when we know when we’ll be back to normal again.”

The water problems are affecting Arrington, Bassingbourn, Litlington, The Mordens and the surrounding area, with some households having low pressure and others, no water at all.

Steeple Morden resident Mike Capay told the Crow: “The main impact is - no showers this morning - but able to work from home to avoid being an embarrassment in the office.

“And more seriously, we have elderly neighbours so we’ve checked they’re OK and have offered both bottled water.

“I hope others are considering their neighbours too.”

A Cambridge Water spokeswoman said: “We have an inspector in the area trying to locate a possible burst main. If you do spot anything on your travels, please let us know. Unfortunately, we do not have any timescales for the supply to be restored. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

They also tweeted: We’re aware of a burst main in #Royston that is currently affecting #Wimpole, #SteepleMorden, #Orwell, #Bassingbourn, #ShingayCumWendy, #Arrington, #GuildrenMorden and #Litlington. Our teams are working hard to locate the leak and complete the repair as soon as possible.”
