STEEPLE Morden conservation area is to become more accessible to visitors after it was awarded over £4,000 of Lottery money.

It was announced the Big Lottery Fund is to supply £4,110 to the project.

Sue Norton, from the Steeple Mor-den Village Environment Group said: "It's almost exactly the amount we asked for so I'm thrilled to bits.

"A lot of people in the village don't even know the conservation area exists, so with this money we should be able to make it more visible.

The group will be using the money to buy equipment so that they can tidy up the stream that runs through the site.

This has become overgrown, so one of the first tasks will be to clear away the brambles and put in some extra plants which will increase bio-diversity.

There are also plans to install information boards around the meadow, so that visitors can read about the wildlife and plants in the area.

Sue added: "The meadow also has to be mowed properly on a regular basis, so there are quite a lot of things that need doing.

"But you only have to look at the success of the cowslip festival to see that the conservation area can be a big asset to Steeple Morden," she said.

Anyone who is interested in joining the environment group should call Sue Norton on 01462 853130.
