THE woman responsible for the success of UK Sport, visited a primary school this week to back a new project supporting a healthy lifestyle for youngsters.

UK Sport chairman Sue Campbell was at Meldreth Primary School to celebrate the group's success.

The event was also attended by headteachers, councillors, and sports development officers.

The group's director of healthy lifestyle Ally Brennan said: "Since the project started in September, we have had some very positive feedback, particularly from the schools.

"Our healthy lifestyle mentors are doing a fantastic job in each of the schools involved.

"They have set up active lifestyle and physical health schemes, as well as study support.

"It was such an honour to have Sue present. She has done a lot for sport in the UK and for many years has led the way.

"As a former teacher, Sue knows and understands the importance of young people's involvement with sport.

"She's serious about the project and as well as dealing with the country's top sportsmen, she also takes great pride in youngsters at grass roots level.

"Like us she believes that the children are the future."

The mentors - Jen Ives, Nicky Pedder, and Mark Wyer - said the children and schools were already seeing the benefits.

Miss Ives said: "We have had a lot of support from the schools and it's going really well.

"The project's success is snowballing and the children are showing a real keenness, which is what it's all about."

Pupils from Foxton Primary School produced a dance routine, and Meldreth Primary School demonstrated their keenness by taking part in a number of playground games, before the healthy lifestyle mentors put pupils through their paces with a short running class.

Other schools involved in the project include Melbourn Village College, Bassingbourn Village College, and primary schools Foxton, Fowlmere, Meldreth, Melbourn, Guilden Morden, Steeple Morden, and Bassingbourn.

Talking in a presentation to guests, Mrs Campbell said she was committed to sport both at the top and at grass roots level, and was impressed by the support and awareness shown by all the schools.
