PUPILS at schools around the area got in shape to raise money for Sport Relief.

Youngsters at Tannery Drift School got their running shoes on, as children from across the school took part in the Sport Relief Mile, which saw them complete five- and-a-half laps of the school playing field.

Staff and parents also joined in,with children paying 50p to enter, and adults paying £1.

Matthew Brazier, Year 3 and 4 teacher, organised the event.

He said: "All the children and teachers joined in, whether they were running, or in some cases, walking.

"The fastest pupil was James Edwards, who recorded an excellent time of seven minutes 34 seconds.

"It's been a really fun day and everyone has done very well."

STUDENTS from Melbourn Village College also took to the track to raise money for Sport Relief.

The pupils paid £1 to wear non-uniform for the day, and each ran a mile.

The school has raised around £600.

Money raised by Year 11 will go towards their prom while the rest will be donated to Sport Relief.

MORE than 250 people braved the dismal weather to run a mile for Sport Relief in Great Chishill.

Nearly £1,000 was raised on the day, although this figure is set to rise as it does not include the sponsorship from 200 people who pre-registered for the event. The police alone raised £500.

Among the runners and walkers were the youth group, the WI, the football and cricket clubs, and many others, dressed as fairies, rabbits, clowns, and even Fred and Wilma Flintstone.

Catherine Whyte, event organiser, said: "Even in foul weather conditions, we managed to have an incredibly well supported event for a great cause.

"The atmosphere was very special, and all who took part made sure that they enjoyed themselves.

"We thank everyone who helped and came along to make the day so fantastic."
