A RECORD £6,000 was raised at the Royston Rotary Club's third annual swimathon.

Twenty-five teams took to the pool at Royston Leisure Centre last weekend, with the Puddle Ducks team from Freman College, Buntingford, coming out on top by swimming 153 lengths.

Neil Guttridge, president of the Rotary Club, said: "This is the best swimathon yet, with a record number of teams raising a record sum of money for our chosen charities."

The cash will be split between four charities: The Teenage Cancer Trust's new unit, which is being built at Addenbrooke's Hospital next year, cancer charity Clic Sargant, Cherryhomes Trust, which helps and supports people with severe physical disabilities, and the Rotary Club's Royston Trust Fund.

Organiser of the swimathon, Chris Hardy, said: "Many of the teams have supported us from the beginning and we have been able to welcome several new teams this year.

"We would like to thanks all the teams taking part.

"At the end of each session we were being asked when the next swimathon will be, and although the club has yet to work out its programme for 2009, it is likely to be in October again.
