A temporary display on the Battle of the Somme has gone up this week at Royston’s parish church.
It was organised by Pam Wright and Yolanda Hayes of What Royston Did and Royston Museum.
“The display at St John The Baptist Parish Church focuses on a selection of men from Royston and its surrounding villages who fought at the Somme,” said Yolanda.
“It’s important to show what happened to these soldiers.”
Museum Assistant Jenny Benton added: “I think the final display looks great, it’s so nice to see everyone’s hard work realised and hopefully we will get good feedback from visitors.”
Among the men who fought was Private William Pigg, whose letters regularly appeared in the Crow during the 1914 to 1916 conflict.
An interview he gave in August 1915 recounted his regiment’s actions under the title The Stirring Deeds of the Bedfords.
