A FORMER Royston Runner has died in a cycling accident while serving with the Army in Iraq.
Major Nick Bateson, who had been based at Bassingbourn Barracks 15 years ago, died last week in an accident involving a coach outside Basra Air Station.
The Kent-born officer died from his injuries in hospital.
He had been in Iraq for only three months, where he had been supporting communications between the UK and Iraq-based British forces.
As a keen sportsman, Major Bateson had represented the Army in the triathlon, orienteering, and at swimming.
Former Royston Runner Geoff Jones, who ran with Major Bateson said: "He was a great guy and very good runner.
