A GROUP which strives to shape the future of its town has recommended that Buntingford Town Council applies for a Green Flag Award.

The Buntingford Civic Society hopes the town council applies for the award for Layston Court Gardens.

The award scheme, which isrun by the Civic Trust, is the national standard for parks and green spaces and recognises the best green spaces in the country.

Society chairman Derek Cooper said: "The gardens are a centrepiece set in a conversation area and I have been increasingly impressed by their improved quality.

"There has been tree planting by youngsters, the civic society has funded a watering system and the general care of the place: the flowers, seats and mowing of the grass is a real asset for the town.

"We're fortunate in our part of the world that we have lots of open green space, but in the centre of Buntingford there is little green space and this is why the gardens are so important.

"If we were to receive the award the town would have the prestige of having the enhanced gardens and recognition."

Deputy town clerk Eddie Plume said: "It's going to take a lot more looking at because the requirements are really stringent.

"We will look into it, but it will not happen this financial year.
