A fire that started in the porch of a Fowlmere house spread upstairs and engulfed the roof of the property yesterday evening.
A neighbour called emergency services at about 9pm yesterday after seeing the rear of the property on fire.
The male occupant was out the house by the time first crews arrived on scene.
The crews from Cambridge and Linton were met with smoke and flames issuing from the roof and called on further resources and two crews from Royston.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels, jets and hydrants to extinguish the fire in the two-storey semi-detached house by 11.10pm.
Group commander Jon Anderson said: “The fire started in the porch at the rear of the house and spread through the back of the house on the upstairs floor and engulfed the roof very quickly.
“The first crews in attendance worked very hard to contain the fire and stop it spreading any further through the house, but unfortunately there has been severe smoke and water damage to the downstairs of the property.”
Crews returned to station by 2am.
The cause of the fire was accidental.
