A SWIMMING club has raised £1,100 for charity by taking part in a sponsored event.

Sixty-two children from MC Splash Swimming club in Melbourn, swam a total of 47 miles between them in just two-and-a-half hours.

The money raised was split between the East Anglian Air Ambulance charity and the club, which will use the funds to buy equipment.

MC Splash chairman Michelle Warwick said: "We do a sponsored swim every year, but this is the best response we have ever had.

"It's nice for the children because, as well as raising money, they all get a badge for however far they have swum.

"We chose the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) as it is a local charity and one that is close to our hearts. You never know when you might have to use it."

EAAA fundraising co-ordinator Alison Horsley said: "It is only through the generosity of people such as these that we can continue to fly the East Anglian Air Ambulance seven days a week, responding to an average 100 calls a month."
