Two Second World War shells discovered in Royston this afternoon were found in the garden of King James’ I old hunting lodge, the Crow understands.
Kneesworth Street has been closed near the 17th century Old Palace since shortly before 1pm, when the shells were discovered by workmen.
The Explosives Ordnance Disposal team have arrived in the last 20 minutes to remove the shells.
The discovery has led to a series of road closures, which are causing chaos in the town.
David Hatton told the Crow he had to run to the rail station via a diversion as there was no way through directly to get trains.
And Melbourn man Clive Porter said he was told it could be hours before the closures are lifted.
Bus service provider Stagecoach East tweeted: “Due to an incident in Royston the 26 service cannot serve Mill Road, Queens Road and Kneesworth Strerrt. Apologies for any delays.”
