Schoolchildren will be spreading Christmas cheer at a Royston supermarket very shortly to raise funds for two causes.

All 50 pupils at Therfield First School will be joined by staff from 1.30pm when they descend on Royston’s Tesco Extra to sing Christmas carols and sell cakes, crafts and raffle tickets.

Donations will be split between The Causeway-based school for its outside play area and chosen charity Home-Start Royston and Cambridgeshire, which supports young children and their families.

“The event was organised to raise money for developing our school play area following a recent painting project at the school by the Tesco management, as well as continuing our support of Home-Start Royston and Cambridgeshire,” said headteacher Tara McGovern, who has teamed up with Tesco’s community champion Mandy Jinkerson and duty manager Andy to make the idea a reality.

“But above all else, I thought how exciting it would be for the entire school to spend the afternoon spreading the Christmas cheer and a touch of Christmas spirit to the customers of Tesco.

“I felt that this would be a memorable experience for all of our young children to cherish forever.”

The activities run until 3pm today.
