ICKNIELD Walk First School in Royston celebrated its 40th anniversary on Friday with the opening of a new outdoor classroom.

And staff joined pupils to celebrate the school's anniversary by dressing up as fashion icons from over the past 40 years.

Head teacher Marilyn Jones said: "The celebrations went beautifully and the children and staff looked fantastic.

"We had hippies, punks and new romantics. We even had a few Elvis Presleys and Marilyn Monroes.

"The children and the teachers all had a real laugh," she said.

Miss Jones said that it was lovely hearing the memories that staff and pupils from both the past and present had to share and that it was good to see them coming together to celebrate the school's anniversary.

"We wanted to do something different to mark the 40th birthday so we decided to build an outdoor classroom and, after discussing it with the children, it was decided that we would build an outdoor stage where they could put on shows.

"Parents have helped by donating plants and small trees to provide shade and colour, and over the next two to three years we will continue to build it up and make it a project of which to be proud."

The outdoor classroom was officially opened by Royston's MP Oliver Heald who cut a ribbon as the school sang Happy Birthday and let off balloons.
