THREE young musicians are following in the footsteps of leading trumpet player Alison Balsom by accepting a place at a highly acclaimed music school.

Royston Town Band members and Greneway pupils, Hollie Woodley, James Richardson, and Barnaby Jordan, have sealed a week-long placement at Queenswood School in Brookmans Park over the Easter holiday.

While there, they will get to use top-of-the range facilities and learn from music tutors.

Hollie's mum Corinne said: "This is going to help them so much. It's a huge achievement and they have worked very hard to get this opportunity.

"They have put in a lot of practice, both at home and with the Royston Town Band, who have been really supportive.

"Our whole family is proud of Hollie's achievement."

The youngsters were chosen after a series of nationwide auditions, from which Hollie was selected for the National Children's Wind Orchestra, and James and Barnaby chosen for the National Children's Wind Symphonia.

Twelve-year-old Hollie, who plays the cornet, will now play with the orchestra at the Royal College of Music in London and the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music.

She said: "I was really pleased when I found out, and I'm looking forward to the concerts.

"I have played with Alison Balsom in the Royston Town Band and I hope that I can do just as well as she has.

"Getting a place in the National Children's Wind Orchestra is a really big step for me."

Eleven-year-old James said he was surprised to have been accepted, and that he would have to practice a lot more, as the trombone was one of the hardest instruments to play.

Jazz fan Barnaby, 11, said: "I'm really proud to have been given a place.

"I love music, and when I'm older I would like to be a professional musician. Being at the music school will help me a lot."

Greneway music teacher Stewart Debenham added: "This is a very big achievement and the school is very proud of them. They are all very talented musicians."

- Hollie, James, and Barnaby are now seeking sponsorship for their placements.
