Revised housing plans could see construction traffic using one of Royston’s busiest residential streets, raising safety fears.

Fairview Homes’ latest plan for housing north of Royston – 22 homes that would be built adjacent to Thackeray Close in the town – is being discussed by North Herts District Council’s planning committee tomorrow (Thursday), with officers recommending it be approved.

The developer was initially granted permission for the site in October last year, but is now seeking to remove a clause, condition 26, which states it is obligated to build an access road for emergency vehicles.

The North Royston Action Group (NRAG) was formed in 2009 to oppose what it calls “illogical development” to the north of the town, and the group believes if condition 26 is removed, more construction traffic will use Burns Road.

Jayne Bratton, from NRAG, said: “We have always been concerned that Fairview would try to wriggle out of commitments around their developments and this proves our concerns were founded.

“If the decision for Site B is overturned it will be dangerous for all the local residents and we are seriously concerned it will lead to it being overturned for Site A, off of Burns Road, Betjeman Road and Keats Close, which will lead to much more construction traffic.

“We are concerned that this will lead to a number of other changes to existing approved plans. We do not trust Fairview to do what they say.”

Fairview got planning permission for Site A in August, a development of 124 homes.

The developer’s move to remove clause 26 is opposed by Royston Town Council and Hertfordshire Constabulary.
