THREE Royston runners followed in the footsteps of Paula Radcliffe by completing the New York marathon.

Paul Haynes, Libby Watson, and her dad, Alan, were among 39,500 competitors in the marathon.

Although they were some distance behind the winners, Paul ran a personal best time of four hours, seven minutes, while Libby and Alan came home in four hours, 48 minutes, a personal best for Alan.

Paul said: "The day was truly fantastic; the atmosphere was great and the crowds amazing. The spectacular views of the city skyline are something I'll never forget.

"This was my second marathon, and it's very different from the London course. It undulates a lot and the last three miles are uphill.

"The American crowd seemed louder than London's.

"There was a real multi-cultural feeling to the race too. We met people from France, Spain, Germany, and New Zealand, and everyone was very friendly.
