An underpass in Royston has been named 'best design and construction' winner at a national infrastructure awards.

The walking and cycling underpass won the Sustrans gong as it established a new crossing under the railway – something that has rarely been done in the UK.

Until the underpass was built by Herts County Council with partners Sustrans, Royston Town Council and North Hertfordshire District Council, Royston was a town divided by the Hitchin to Cambridge railway line. There was no way of crossing the town on foot or by bike except via a busy road by the railway station or by going out to the bypass. Working with the county council, Sustrans helped to develop a new network which allows people to walk and cycle more quickly and safely than before.

The underpass forms part of the Royston Cycle Network and there are talks going on to link it up with the rest of a national cycle network.
