Royston Town Band building for future with expansion plans

After a bumper autumn which included 150th anniversary celebrations, Royston Town Band members could be forgiven for resting on their laurels.
But with plans afoot for a new band room and development band, as well as the usual packed festive schedule, they’re just getting started.
The band’s last event of the year will be the 7pm Christmas Concert at Royston Town Hall on Sunday, after which the focus will turn to 2015 expansion plans.
When the Manor House in Melbourn Street was sold last year, the band had to move out of its home of 50 years and look for a new base.
The band stepped up its fundraising efforts this year – aided by a 150-year extravaganza at Royston Parish Church in October – and it is hoped that building will begin shortly for a band room at the rear of Tannery Drift School.
Bass player and publicity officer Owen Simons said: “The Royston Town Development Band is another new and exciting initiative for 2015.
“Once we have a new rehearsal space, we will be setting up a new development band specifically to encourage complete beginners of all ages, or those who wish to play simpler arrangements and develop their skills.
“It’s really exciting that we will be able to see some real progress on the ground soon and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped to get us this far.
“The build is still dependant on a successful Christmas fundraising period, so please pop some money in our buckets!”
The band is currently recruiting for a voluntary band leader for the new group so if you are interested in trying your hand at playing or conducting, email Charmian at firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
Tickets for the Christmas Concert are available on the door, or in advance from the Stationery Cupboard in High Street, at £7 for adults and £3 for children.
All ticket sales and donations will go towards building the new band room.
