A thief from Royston who stole tools worth £4,200 has been given a community sentence.

Dean Carter, of Princes Mews, denied the charge of theft when he appeared before magistrates, but was found guilty.

Passing sentence at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on Monday, chairman of the bench Eleanor Cooke imposed an 18-month community order, requiring 47-year-old Carter to complete up to 30 sessions of a general offending behaviour programme, as well as other rehabilitation activities.

She also ordered him to pay £1,500 in compensation for the stolen tools. No order was made for costs or a victim surcharge because compensation was deemed to take priority.
