THE petrol station at the Royston Tesco has been confirmed as one of the stations that had contaminated petrol.

A Tesco spokeswoman told The Crow this week, that the branch's forecourt was one of the ones that had been affected by silicone contamination.

The country's biggest retailer carried out extensive tests and according to the spokeswoman the contaminated petrol had been traced to a storage depot in Essex.

The faulty petrol has caused hundreds of drivers in the south and east of England various problems over the past two weeks. The problems seem to be centred on oxygen sensors which determine the mix of oxygen and petrol supplied to the engine.

It is thought silicone may have found its way into a batch of petrol in transit by ship into the UK or in storage containers.

The spokeswoman said: "The Royston Tesco does get its petrol from the Essex depot and I can confirm that it was one of the branches on the list. We have traced the problem back to the 2nd March.

"I can assure drivers that the problem has been addressed and we have drained the pumps and everything is up and running again.

"We have had a lot of complaints across east and north Herts and we will be happy to talk to anyone who has been having problems."

Drivers are being told to keep their fuel receipts and, if their vehicle is affected to contact their car dealer for advice.
