No less than eleven schools from Royston and the surrounding villages have taken part in the annual Youth Makes Music event in Cambridge, organised by Royston Rotary Club.
The concert began at University Concert Hall with a rousing rendition of In The Hall of the Mountain King by Grieg played by the combined schools’ orchestras and conducted by Nathan Collins.
This was followed by Michael Jackson’s Earth Song sung by a combined choir with lots of audience participation of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’ in the choruses, directed by Jenny Warburton.
The combined choir followed this up with Brazilian song, Hey Dumba, atmospherically brought to life with a wide range of animal noises off-stage, all held together under the direction of Shaunaid Crosby.
Roysia Middle School performed a piece by Pergolesi with a flute solo by Willow Wilson, which was said to be ‘beautiful’.
This was followed by Ave Verum which was sung in Latin completely from memory.
Greneway Middle School performed Danny Boy using violins, cello flute clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and drums, and Meridian School’s orchestra up the tempo with Live and Let Die.
The first schools also performed in their own choir.
After a few words of praise by the president of Royston Rotary Club, Karin Weston, the combined orchestras and choirs assembled on stage to give a rendition of Something Inside so Strong which, was said to be was so obviously enjoyed by all the performers.
The performance ended with a dizzying rendition of We Go Together from the film Grease, which was performed both with gusto and with hand jiving.
