STUDENTS in Royston got an insight into the horrors of the Holocaust when a survivor of the Nazi concentration camps visited their school.

Rudy Oppenheimer spent the day at The Meridian School in Royston last week as part of a programme organised by the Holocaust Education Trust.

He spoke to pupils from Meridian, as well as younger students from Roysia and Greneway middle schools.

Mr Oppenheimer was transported to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp with his family in 1944 when he was 13. Though he and his brother and sister survived the camp, both their parents lost their lives.

Headteacher Dr Michael Firth said: β€œIt is a privilege for us to welcome Rudi Oppenheimer to the academy and his testimony will remain a powerful reminder of the horrors so many experienced.”
