The role zoos play in conserving endangered species of animals was brought to life for a group of students who visited a wildlife park.
The AS biology class from Meridian School in Royston visited Shepreth Wildlife park last month, enjoying close encounters with a number of the park’s inhabitants, such as snakes and skunks, and taking part in a discussion about conservation.
Lainie Bazzoni, head of education at the wildlife park, said: “We believe the future of the zoo industry lies totally in the conservation of endangered species and educating people about the need to conserve and protect invertebrates, animals, plants and ecosystems.
“ To educate people about wildlife in a zoo setting is to pose questions and search for answers.”
Becky Belson, head of biology at Meridian, said: “With the number of species threatened with extinction increasing constantly, the visit to the wildlife park highlighted the important role zoos have in conserving species.
