AN MP is asking for clarification on whether the Olympic torch will pass through Royston, after the town was left off of the relay route.

Additional stop-offs for the torch were published on Monday, but Crow country does not feature.

The only place in North Herts where the torch will stop off is Letchworth GC, on Sunday, July 8.

North East Herts MP Oliver Heald said: “I welcome the news that the Olympic torch will stop in Letchworth Garden City in my constituency, but it is not clear to me whether it will pass through Royston, nearby or via villages close to the town. I am therefore writing to Lord Coe, asking for clarification.

“Royston has put a huge effort into celebrating the Olympics and it would be marvellous if local people were to have the chance to see the torch.”

London 2012 organisers said that street-by-street detail will be published next year. It could be, therefore, that the torch could pass through Royston and surrounding villages en route to other destinations.

But Royston 2012 Committee said that it was disappointed not to be included in the relay.

Committee chairman Cllr Lindsay Davidson said: “Obviously we are bitterly disappointed about the decision.

“We worked hard to get the Olympic torch to pass through Royston, but, obviously, the organisers were looking to take it to places with larger populations.

“There was a lot of support to have the torch relay here and we were always hoping that Royston would be seen as a place which could produce an inspiring event for the Olympics.

“We are determined to make next year’s celebrations a success and will not be deterred from not being included on the Olympic torch relay route.”

The 70 day relay will start at Land’s End, Cornwall on May 19, 2012. It will then travel an estimated 8,000 miles around the UK.

Derrick Ashley, chairman of the Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners Partnership, said: “London 2012 brings a wealth of excitement to Hertfordshire and the torch relay will provide opportunities for communities to get together and celebrate not the only the Games, but to show support for the achievements of local people chosen to run with the Olympic flame.

“We are fortunate that the torch will visit 10 towns in the county, giving plenty of cause for celebration. This is a great opportunity for local communities, and all of Hertfordshire residents will be within just a few miles of the torch at some point during the weekend celebrations.”
