An 18-year-old from Royston suffered lower back and coccyx pain after a car ploughed into him while he was skateboarding, causing him to go straight over the bonnet and land in the middle of the road.

Kavan Hanks, who works at The Green Man pub in Royston, had just left work on Wednesday, June 15 at about 11.30pm and was skateboarding along Priory Lane when a car mounted the kerb and sped towards him.

He said: “Whoever was driving seemed to see me just before it got to the little island with the no entry signs.

“It accelerated up the road and proceeded to mount the curb and speed into me on the pavement. I was hit at pace and went straight into and over the bonnet and landed in the middle of the road with my glasses flying off, and the contents of my bag and pockets flying out.

“As I was on the floor screaming for someone’s help, I caught the back of the car as it headed to the right round the corner behind the two pubs – it was a mid 2000s silver Ford focus and it didn’t change its speed whatsoever at any point.

“After I was hit, a dozen neighbours came out of their homes after hearing the car accelerate and my screaming and shouting. They came to my help and helped me collect my things.”

Paramedics and police arrived, and found that he had knee and ankle injuries, but thankfully nothing serious.

After visiting Lister Hospital in Stevenage with a friend, he was told to rest, and so took a couple of days off from work and college. Despite being back at work, Kavan is still wondering who would do such a thing. He said: “There was no braking or attempt to swerve which is why I am very adamant that it was in fact an intended incident. However, I don’t have enemies in the area and have not done anyone enough trouble for them to cause harm to me or risk themselves being in trouble with the authorities.”

Police are currently investigating, and a spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 11.37pm on June 15 to report a collision in Priory Lane, Royston. A teenager was reportedly struck by a vehicle, which was not at the scene when officers attended. He was treated by the ambulance service at the scene but his injuries were not thought to be serious. Enquiries into the incident are continuing.”
