Young programmers of the future from a Royston school showed off their coding skills after being invited to the Cambridge University Computer Laboratory where they received an accredited award from the Duke of York.
The Duke has launched iDEA – a new initiative designed to support teenagers and young adults in developing their ideas into successful digital business ventures.
After meeting the Duke and showing him the games they had coded, Year 10 students at Meridian School were personally presented with a technical skills badge, to mark their achievements using the newly launched online platform from the Cambridge Coding Academy.
Head of computing Wayne Hamilton said: “It was so rewarding for the students to have the opportunity to show someone as illustrious as the Duke of York what they were capable of.
“We are teaching a generation of children to programme in a way that we couldn’t have imagined ten years ago.”
Assistant head David Atkins added: “Computer science and computer programming are a well established part of our curriculum, GCSE and A-level studies. We are delighted to be able to take up opportunities such as this.”
