Royston Says No to Gladman campaigners have said they are pleased “Affinity Water has acknowledged possible risks” to Royston’s drinking water supply from the proposed site for 120 houses at the top of Briary Lane.

Planning applications are referred to water companies when there may be issues relating to water quality or quantity, and – in a letter seen by the Crow – Affinity Water acknowledge the sensitivity of the site and highlights construction works and soakaways as areas for further investigation.

“In our opinion this site is wholly inappropriate for any development,” said campaign group chair Alf Vaisey.

“Affinity Water have been clear, Gladman will need to show the necessary risk assessments have been completed in line with the Environment Agency’s groundwater protection policy.”

An Affinity Water spokesman said: “A planning application has been brought to our attention for 120 homes near Briary Lane in Royston.

“We have responded to the planning application to advise of the correct procedures to follow to ensure local water sources are protected.”

The Crow has previously contacted Gladman who said they would not provide comment on the application.

The North Herts District Council planning application consultation is open until Thursday, go to pa2.north-herts.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=P5KRVVLKH9T00 to submit your views.
