Royston retailers are being supported on Small Business Saturday and in the run-up to Christmas as cash mobbers flock to the shops.

Christmas is set to come early for a lucky shop in Royston when eager customers gather at noon for the town’s fourth Cash Mob.

The nominations are in and a shortlist of three independent shops will go into the hat for one to be selected for a friendly invasion of customers each wanting to spend £5.

To extend the benefit beyond the chosen shop, other Royston retailers are giving special discounts to the cash mobbers on Saturday only.

Cash Mob organiser Chris Lee is keen to mark SBS in an imaginative way. He said: “People complain about closures in the town centre, but they will only stay open if we shop locally.

“We wanted to show our support in a practical, fun way and by involving more shops in the cash mob, on the same day as the Christmas Fayre, more businesses will benefit.”

Royston shops are also set to benefit from this year’s Sheep Trail which will see children searching for knitted animals over the Advent period.

Church members and knitting groups have been creating sheep for shops to select, name and place in their shop.

Children need to find the sheep and write its name under the shop on their trail sheet – once completed, designated drop-off points will be given to them to enter the competition.

The Sheep Trail starts today with the closing date on Wednesday, December 17, before entries are collected the following day to gather the flock back from the shops.

Winners will be drawn from the correct entries and a prize giving and tea will be held at 3pm on Sunday December 21 at the Coombes Community Centre on Burns Road.

Flock to the Shops organiser Margaret MacCormack said: “We thought it would be great fun for children and families to follow a sheep trail through the shops in Royston during advent.

“Last year the Nativity Sheep Trail was a great success in Royston so we are planning to do the same again.

“It is amazing fun for children to follow the sheep trail, bringing many families to Royston stores in the Christmas advent season.”
