Royston pupils step back in time with history re-enactors

This time it was the turn of Year 8 who found out about life during the Civil War with Steve Parish of Past Alive and his assistant Irene. Pupils had the opportunity to handle a number of authentic and reproduction artefacts as well as witnessing the firing of a musket.

The following day, Year 7 were taken back to Medieval England, where they had the opportunity to find about the life for an ordinary person at this time as well the life of a soldier.

A spokeswoman said: “Without a doubt, one of the highlights was when Steve took the Year 7s outside and showed them the skills of a bowman when he shot arrows from his longbow across the school field.”

Year 5 and 6 also had the opportunity to explore the periods of history they have been studying when the found out more about the Egyptians and the Tudors with Steve and Irene.

In other Greneway news, a group of Year 7 and 8 pupils have been busy training as ‘digital leaders’ this term using materials from Childnet.

The Childnet Digital Leaders Programme aims to empower children and young people to champion digital citizenship and digital creativity within their schools and to educate their peers, parents and teachers about staying safe online.

The leaders have been working hard to complete online tutorials and prepare for a series of assemblies that they will be leading following Safer Internet Day on 6th February.

The spokeswoman added: “We were delighted that all their hard work had not gone unnoticed by the organisers of Childnet, who this week came into school to talk to our digital leaders about their work.

“Our thanks must go to Friends of Greneway School who have kindly supported this venture by funding the training.”
