The organiser of this year's Royston Poppy Appeal would like to say a huge thank you to all the business owners in the town who helped raise money this year.

The owner of Royston Tandoori, Safwaan Choudhury, raised £50 by donating a pound from every order during National Curry Week.

Lisa Stanway from Domino Art raised £180 by selling her handmade poppy brooches through the craft fair and shop No 3.

Shop owner Laura Whitford along with Christine Alfred made some knitted, crocheted poppies and together raised £79.

The Original Factory Shop also helped raise cash with a £90 donation.

Funeral directors Newlings of Royston played its part by making a special window display to commemorate the fallen, while Royston Conservative Club’s annual poppy raffle raised a total of £470.

Royston Poppy Appeal organiser Lorraine MacLeod said: “It is crucial to the appeal to have support from local shops, and businesses, especially as we get less and less volunteers to do house to house and street collections.

“We would struggle hugely without their support and really appreciate it.

“We would just like to say a massive thank you to all of the dedicated volunteers who have been collecting for a number of years, some of which have done so for more than 30 years. They go out collecting from house to house in all weathers.

“Thank you also to our new volunteers who have joined us this year.

“We are really struggling to keep the appeal going, there are only a handful of us that organise and prepare everything all year round – so if anyone would like to help out, then please get in touch.”
