THE Poppy Appeal was last week launched in Royston at the Mayor’s civic reception.

Last Friday’s event saw the mayor of Royston, Cllr Robert Inwood, start the collection in earnest, following on from his predecessor, Cllr Martin Beaver, who made the Royston Branch of the Royal British Legion one of his nominated charities.

Cllr Inwood invited Royston branch chairman Chris Murphy to read out the exhortation, which was followed by a minute’s silence in remembrance of all servicemen and women who had given their lives, in times of conflict, for their country.

Mr Murphy said: “We feel very honoured that for the second year running, the mayor of Royston has chosen to support the Royston Branch of the Royal British Legion, and the work that it carries out in the local community.

“This year sees the Royal British Legion celebrate its 90th anniversary as a national organisation, and the need for its services are as important today as they were when the organisation was formed in 1921.”

With Remembrance Sunday just around the corner, he also appealed for ex-service personnel who live in the town to come and support the Remembrance parade and service, which will be held on Sunday, November 13.

Those wishing to participate in the parade should meet at Queens Road, Royston at 10.15am.

Mr Murphy added “You do not have to be a member of the Legion to participate in the parade and service, and I hope that as many residents of Royston as possible will turn out to support this important occasion.”
