A ROYSTON man seriously injured in an accident in Australia could be flown home this weekend.

Conrad Wellstead, 24, of Poplar Close, Royston, has been undergoing treatment at the Royal Brisbane Hospital since the accident at Rainbow Beach in Queensland last month.

He had been in an induced coma after sustaining head injuries, but came round two weeks ago and is now fit enough to be flown back to the UK to continue his rehabilitation.

His parents Michael and Stephanie who have been at his bedside since the accident, with his girlfriend Claire Goodbody, are also set to return.

His sister Melanie Wellstead said: "Flights are booked for Sunday. They are not exactly sure if they will get to fly as scheduled because of the ash clouds, but are hoping that as Conrad is a priority they will be able to fly back as soon as possible."

Mum Stephanie added: "We would just like to thank everyone so much for their thoughts, love and prayers.

"The doctors say it is a miracle and so good to see Conrad up and walking around.

He has sustained a severe head injury and with rehabilitation, perhaps nine-12 months or even less, we are all hoping we will get Conrad back to his old self.

"The hospital staff here have been second to none and the care they have given our son has been out of this world.
