Royston Leisure Centre is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary in style with a weekend of fun for all the family.

The jam-packed fun bonanza will kick off next Saturday, September 19, at 12 noon with free swimming all day, as well as inflatable bungee runs and the chance to have a scrap in sumo wrestling suits.

Then at 3pm there will be a barbecue and face painting, plus sports challenges all afternoon.

Expect free sports all day on Sunday, including badminton and short tennis, while under fives can take part in soft play from 9.30am. There will also be a pool inflatable session between 2pm and 4pm.

The leisure centre in Woodcock Road has been at the heart of the community since it opened its doors in September 2005.

As the foundations were being laid, children from nearby Meridian and Greneway middle schools were invited to fill a time capsule with memorabilia recording what it was like to be a student at their schools in 2004. The capsules contained photos, poems and essays, as well as school dinner menus.

The two-storey centre, which is owned by North Herts District Council and has been run on its behalf by Stevenage Leisure Ltd since 2010, offers a 25-metre swimming pool with six lanes, a large sports hall, a 42 station fitness facility with state of the art equipment and two dance studios offering more than 60 weekly classes.

Councillor Jane Gray, who oversees the council’s leisure facilities, said: “Since its opening in 2005, the centre has gone from strength to strength. We look forward to building on that success by continuing to provide outstanding facilities.”

Stevenage Leisure managing director Ian Morton said: “It has been a huge privilege for all the team involved to be able to help so many local people enjoy their sport, while improving their health and wellbeing.”
