Volunteers from one of Royston’s biggest firms have been getting green fingered to help restore a local plantation.

The team from Johnson Matthey carried out maintenance work at the Green Walk plantation which is run by Royston in Bloom.

The group were awarded a National Lottery grant in 2012 to revamp the plantation. Benches and notice boards were installed to make the site more user friendly.

Councillor Les Baker, chairman of Royston in Bloom, said: “Over the years the volunteers from Johnson Matthey have helped enormously.

“Without help of this kind we would not be able to do such work or become involved in such projects.”

The plantation has become a thriving centre for wildlife with the introduction of bats and bird boxes.

Councillor Baker added: “The Green Walk plantation still remains one of those hidden gems of Royston.

“Those using the plantation really appreciate the work carried out there.”
