A team of firefighters from Royston will be climbing a scaffolding tower continuously – until the height of Mount Everest has been reached – on Saturday, to raise money for a young girl with dyskinetic cerebral palsy.

Firefighter Jordon Gilks, a family friend of six-year-old Poppy Cundy, approached crew commander Derek Hutton to see if they could organise a charity ladder climb in aid of charity Help Poppy Walk.

Poppy’s cerebral palsy affects all four limbs and means she can’t do things that many take for granted, like walk, run, sit unaided, feed or dress herself.

Derek said: “Being a father myself, I had no hesitation in helping organise this event and I am sure that every other parent feels the same way. If we can help raise any sum of money which is going to help her develop, to improve her quality of life, then that will certainly bring a smile to peoples’ faces.

“We at Royston Fire Station are holding the charity ladder climb to help raise much needed funds for the charity to help buy her equipment to develop her muscles and to help her stand, and eventually walk, with the help of much needed physiotherapy sessions.

“In organising this event we could not have done it without the help of Herts Fire and Rescue Service, Royston Fire Station, firefighters and volunteers, Tesco Royston, and BWS Scaffolding, and of course Poppy Cundy.”

The task – in which only the climbing up will be recorded – will take place at Royston Tesco at 10am on Saturday. To donate, click here.
