WHAT began with a pancake race comes to a close with the Good Friday walk on Friday 2nd April here in Royston. Local people from a variety of churches will hold morning worship in different church buildings and then meet near the bandstand in Priory Gardens at around 11am.Whether the day will bring sunshine or showers has yet to be seen as the joint congregation then walk toward the Royston Cross. This historic meeting point at the heart of the community may well have witnessed similar Christian gatherings across the centuries. Despite the background noise of traffic this planned occasion marks a Christian observance recalling the death of Jesus Christ some 2000 years ago in Jerusalem. Internationally, this day is marked on every continent of the world involving millions of Christians who will take time out to attend worship. Seen through the eyes of faith, the death of Christ is believed to offer forgiveness to those who search for peace with God.

The busy weekend which follows culminates on Easter Sunday the 4th April where local churches will celebrate their belief in resurrection and new life. For many children in church this will also be an opportunity for an Easter egg hunt and a family day spent together. It is worth noting that chocolate and church begin with the same two letters of the alphabet and have become the best of friends at this time of the year! Quite a few churches have already advertised their services open to the public during this period and some will also be enjoying shared meals.
