A huge orange octopus was one of the strange creatures seen flying over Therfield Heath on Sunday at the Royston Charity Kite Festival.

The event, which is in its 25th year and is organised by the Rotary Club of Royston, attracted a crowd of more than 5,000 people – many of them families who picnicked and made their own kites.

There was also a display of historic cars, a huge tombola, and stalls. Royston’s town mayor, Councillor Vera Swallow, opened the festival and stayed all afternoon to judge the kites made and flown by many of the children.

Royston’s Rotary president Graeme Dargie said: “It was a really great day, the weather couldn’t have been kinder, and Royston really turned out to support us, as they always do.”

The show’s proceeds will go to good causes – including Mr Dargie’s chosen charity Home-Start Royston and South Cambs.

It’s estimated that when counted up the final figure could be as much as £6,500.
