A BOY from Royston has won a national award for art – and will be celebrating in style by having “the best Christmas ever.”

William Green, a four-year-old pupil of Studlands Rise First School, scooped the overall winner award at the inaugural Butlins Toddle Art Competition, and was presented with a plethora of exciting prizes.

The Contemporary Art Society (CAS) judged event awarded William with a week’s holiday in Butlins for him and his family, 100 worth of toys, 100 worth of arts vouchers and 500 cash, for his collage made from photographs and sand.

Jamie Green, William’s father, said: “This is awesome for William. It’s a fantastic achievement and thanks to the prizes he will be having the best Christmas ever.

William’s piece involved drawing pictures in the sand when on a family holiday in Northumberland.

He then took pictures of his drawings, and stuck them on some paper with some seaweed and other beach debris.

“The judges loved his work,” said Mr Green. He entered about three months ago when his grandmother saw the competition advertised in the national press.

“There were hundreds of entries, and they whittled them down to the final 12. We then had to go to Blackall Studios in London for the final where they decided William’s was the best one.

“He was even ‘papped’ by photographers on the way out!”

Fabienne Nicholas of the CAS said of William’s work: “It is really gorgeous. We were astounded by the quality of it. We were sometimes looking at it and thinking of a Goya painting.”
