A merry band of volunteers and guests of the Royston and District Community Transport group enjoyed a special 21st birthday Christmas dinner at the Coach House Hotel in Flint Cross last week.

Celebrations kicked off with the December draw of the popular 300 Club, run by official volunteer fundraisers Pat and Brian Johnson, which has raised more than £3,000 per annum in the first two years of its operation.

A Christmas draw – organised by long-serving drivers Gerry Pottinger and Larry Gregory – for 16 hampers followed, which raised more than £800 towards the scheme’s fund for a new wheelchair-accessible multi-purpose vehicle.

Scheme manager David Wherrell then thanked everyone for their hard work over the year and gave a brief history of how the group started back in 1994, when founder Sue Vincent was asked to set up a community transport scheme.

Sue received a gift and bouquet of flowers for her determination to get the funding to start the scheme.
