Royal wedding fever coming to Royston

HERTFORDSHIRE is the county where most Royal wedding street parties will be hosted – with at least one to take place in Royston.
Applications for parties closed on Monday, with Herts County Council (HCC) receiving 298 requests in total.
The Crow was told by Helen Pigott of Cowslip Close that her street was planning a party for the big day.
Mrs Pigott said: “We were having a drink with neighbours over Christmas and got talking about the wedding.
“Someone mentioned that we should hold something in the street and it went from there.
“There are 13 houses in our street and everyone was interested in taking part. We are trying to organise something that the children will remember for years to come.
“We’re going to make sure the youngsters receive a party bag and a commemorative mug to keep as a memento.
“I have been living here for 14 years and it’s nice to know that community spirit is still alive as we don’t get the opportunity to do things like this very often.”
Cowslip Close will be decorated with bunting and union jack flags, while cakes and refreshments will also be provided for its residents.
Rob Smith of HCC’s transport management department said: “We wanted to make it as easy as possible for residents to apply for a royal wedding street party.
“Going by the large number of applications we’ve received, our straightforward online application form and the decision to waive the normal road closure fee, we have clearly done the trick.
“It’s fantastic that Hertfordshire’s residents have shown such enthusiasm for this special day and we’re glad we’ve been able to help so many communities come together and celebrate.”
North Herts had 36 applications for street parties, the fourth highest of the ten Hertfordshire districts.
