Rotary Club of Royston members were out and about with Pudsey on Saturday to raise money for Children in Need.

Following their efforts outside Royston’s Tesco super store and in the town centre to raise £1,500, the group has now chalked up £22,000 for various charities over the past two years.

Rotary Club of Royston president Clarice Wahlich said: “Once again this year we were overwhelmed by the generosity of the public.

“Our Pudsey captured the attention of the children and people just kept giving.

“Our members can be proud of all their efforts to support charity groups.”

A year after Typhoon Haiyan caused devastation in the Philippines, the club has learned about the use of its donation to the disaster fund.

They raised more than £3,600 from a number of events towards helping people rebuild their lives after the disaster.

The money was used to provide tents and a supply of life straws so that untreated water could be used safely.

The donation also helped in the supply of three motorised fibre-glass boats so that the fishing community could begin to renew their lives.

The boats are emblazoned with the words Rotary Club of Royston.

Chris Hardy, chairman of the Royston club’s international committee, said: “This is one of those things that Rotary does so well. It shows not only the great generosity of the people of Royston but the strength of the Rotary international network.”

A Rotary International spokesman said: “The idea behind providing the fishing boats was that such a project was seen as sustainable.

“We wanted to empower the survivors and help them pick up the pieces of their lives and give them back the livelihood they lost.”
