MP Andrew Lansley has branded Government plans to increase road tax as "a slap in the face".
The south Cambridgeshire MP is calling on the Government to scrap the plans for the rise.
"The Government must execute a sharp U-turn," he said.
"Any change in road tax should focus only on the most polluting vehicles."
And he stressed: "All Prime Minister Gordon Brown is interested in is finding new ways to push up his notorious stealth taxes even further."
Mr Lansley, the Shadow Health Secretary, said the plans would cause low-income homes to be hit hard.

He continued that as the tax was being introduced as a retrospective measure, there would be a "plummeting" in the re-sale price of second-hand cars.
"This will make it more difficult for people to replace their car and upgrade to a new or better one," he said.
The tax increase will see the Government raising about £2.5 billion from the measure.
"This is another slap in the face for hard-working families," said Mr Lansley.
He said the typical tax bill for a Ford Mondeo would increase from £210 to £310 and there would also be a new £500 showroom tax.
