Herts Highways will be sending broken steel temporary signs to The Mount Prison in Bovingdon.
The aim is to give the signs a makeover in an effort to cut resource wastage.
The signs will be repaired in the prison's metal workshop.
Hundreds of street signs are damaged across the country each year.
The aluminium signs are also being recycled in another scheme introduced by Herts Highways.
In recent weeks, staff have been collecting them for recycling, and the Bedford-based company EMR takes the aluminium as raw material for refineries and smelters.
Councillor Stuart Pile, executive member for transport and the environment said: "These recycling programmes show how keen we are on imaginative and innovative green initiatives.
