A £210,000 scheme to improve the safety on the A505 at Flint Cross started on Saturday. The scheme will include repairs to the carriageway, resurfacing, and new road markings along the road between the junction with New Road, Melbourn and the Heydon junction. These works will take place under a convoy system with traffic lights during off-peak hours from Monday to Friday. The work is expected to take about four weeks. Mick Oakman, divisional maintenance engineer for Cambridgeshire County Council, said: "This much-needed scheme should be a real improvement to the surface and safety of this road, which is well worn. "This scheme is part of the county council's on-going commitment to improve rural roads." - A SAFETY scheme on the A10 near Westmill has cost £105,000. But the scheme, which aims to help direct drivers safely through the junction, has been criticised by Buntingford town councillor Pat Whittaker. "The road should have been monitored about 30 years ago. It could have prevented spending this huge sum of money," said Cllr Whittaker. Under the safety scheme, a brown tourist sign was taken down last December because it did not meet requirements, nor comply with tourist regulations for trunk roads published last year. A Highways Agency spokesman said: "This scheme has undergone detailed investigations in which a number of potential safety improvements were considered." The spokesman said comments and suggestions from residents were considered.
