MORE than 50 burglaries have been committed in South Cambridgeshire since the turn of the year, leading to police to issue a warning to residents.

Since January 1, 53 burglaries and attempted break-ins have occurred in the district, and police are urging residents in the largely rural district to ensure their homes are secure.

Jewellery and cash have been the main targets for the raiders, who usually break in by smashing windows or patio doors.

As reported in The Crow, a number of schools in the area were also targeted by burglars last month, with money taken from Foxton and Haslingfield Primary schools amongst others.

Crime Reduction Officer at Cambridgeshire Police, Rachel Carr, said: “We would urge residents to keep a lookout for suspicious activity, but there are also measures you can take to protect your own home.

“Unless patio doors are fitted with a multi-lock system it is best to fit additional locks. They should be fitted on the bottom of the fixed frame at the centre, and on the side frame at the opening point at the top of the door.

“You can fix blocks or anti-lift devices to prevent doors being lifted off their track. It is also worth considering reinforced glass when replacing or changing patio door units, as this will give a much greater resistance to attack. Patio door locking bars are also available to improve security.”

Anyone with any information on the burglaries should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
