RESIDENTS and councillors in Bassingbourn were getting together to tackle anti-social behaviour in the village.

Last night (Wednesday), residents were meeting to discuss issues surrounding anti-social behaviour.

Councillor Linda Oliver was due to attend the meeting with parish councillors, police and neighbourhood watch co-ordinator Vic Nickson.

Cllr Jack White, chairman of Bassingbourn Parish Council, said: "It is a small minority of youngsters that are causing trouble.

"We are seeing damage to cars and property, abuse to people and drinking on the recreation ground.

"We are hoping to get better links with the police."

- Bassingbourn Village College has been the go-ahead to provide a youth club once the summer holidays are over.

Cllr Oliver said: "We need to provide somewhere for the young people."

The club will open on Friday evenings on a trial basis.

There has also been agreement from the parish council and South Cambridgeshire District Council to explore allowing youngsters to create earth mounds for use as BMX ramps.

Cllr Oliver said: "This is not on the scale of the one in Royston. It will be a small area and low key."

"One of the most important aspects is that neighbours around the area will be comfortable with the level of use."

The area of land close to the existing recreation ground will be a member's only area and will be tightly controlled.

The mounds will be built by the youngsters themselves.
